Your role: As a Reporter/Editor, you work under the responsibility of the Media Chief. Your primary objective is to perform reporting and editorial assignments related to the gathering, writing and presentation of program material for all three of our media platforms: Radio, Television and the Web. You will develop and maintain contact with a variety of sources as well as work in close co-operation with your program unit. You will have demonstrated success in your role by gathering and reporting information from various sources, conducting an analysis of facts and information gathered, drawing conclusions or raising issues requiring further investigation, and contributing ideas, written scripts, and program content. You will also, as required, critically edit material written by others, present information and/or analysis on air in a variety of formats, and perform other production or administrative tasks associated with the smooth functioning of the newsroom, program unit or station. Your work will be governed by CBC's journalistic and broadcasting policy and protocols. Function: Perform reporting and editorial assignments related to the gathering, writing and presentation of program material for radio, television or other media for English and French Services. Work is governed by CBC/Radio-Canada's journalistic and programming policies, practices and standards. Advice and guidance are regularly available but there is latitude for initiative and independent judgment. There may be opportunity to coordinate the work of others, and close cooperation with the program unit is essential. Key Tasks: Develop and maintain contact with a variety of sources. Analyze facts and information gathered, and draw conclusions or ask questions about issues requiring further investigation. Prepare and write scripts, continuity and headlines. Gather and report information from various sources. Decide which elements should be included in an item, their order, length and sequence, as well as the method of transition from one element to another. As required, perform the following tasks: Critically edit material written by others. Determine, in accordance with established routine, the sequence and timing of elements making up a newscast, which is typically of a pre-determined format and for which the majority of content is supplied. Liaise with other staff to ensure required material is available. Select music and effects. Present information and/or analyses on air in a variety of formats. Follow specific areas of current public interest or concern. Perform other production or administrative tasks associated with the smooth functioning of the newsroom, program unit or station.The successful candidate will report for all editorial platforms and be able to work flexible hours when required. We are looking for a candidate with the following: Objective Criteria: Journalism degree and/or university degree in a related field, e.g. political science. Three years' directly related experience. Excellent reporting, interviewing and live stand-up skills, and highly adept at using social media from the field. Ability to generate and develop story ideas and scoops. Fully bilingual in French and English (spoken and written). Knowledge of affairs pertaining to British-Columbia and the Yukon and Franco-BC community issues. Knowledge of CBC/Radio-Canada journalistic and programming policies. Knowledge of CBC/Radio-Canada programming. May be required to work mornings, evenings and weekends. Must possess a valid driver's license as well as a driving record that meets the minimum requirements of CBC/Radio-Canada's insurance company. May be called upon to do various roles within the newsroom. Understanding of the public broadcaster's role and responsibilities. Subjective Criteria: Ability to work with a variety of teams. Critical mind. Proven ability to work in a high-stress, tight-deadline environment. Experience working on multiple projects simultaneously. Candidates may be subject to skills and knowledge testing.
