The School of Music & Theater is located in the Portland cultural
district, home of the Oregon Symphony, the Portland Opera, the
Portland Center for the Performing Arts, the Portland Art Museum,
and the Northwest Film Center. It maintains close ties with the
major musical institutions of the city, and students have many
opportunities to interact with professionals in the community.
Faculty members in the School of Music & Theater are
internationally recognized performers, directors, designers,
conductors, composers and scholars. Portland State University is
not only the largest institution of higher education in Oregon, but
with a 25% minority student population, it is also the most
diverse. The urban location and mission of the University allows
students to pursue innovative options in their theatrical and
musical education. The city is noted for its numerous cafes, pubs,
theaters, restaurants, bookstores, and its public transportation.
Hiking, mountain biking, skiing, sailing, windsurfing, and kayaking
are all accessible within minutes of Portland. The Portland State
University School of Music and Theater seeks a full-time tenure
track Assistant Professor to teach music theory, applied brass, and
related curriculum. The successful applicant will have a documented
history of professional activity in brass performance, evidence of
successful music theory teaching, and the ability to attract and
retain brass students. Portland State's College of the Arts has
made a strong commitment to anti-racism and is seeking faculty

throughout our campus and community. This position is one of five
full-time positions (Choral Music/Social Justice, Opera/Voice,
Music Education, Music Theory/Brass, and Theater Design) open in
the School of Music and Theater through which we intend to advance
our work promoting equity, diversity and inclusion. Primary
Activity I - Instructional Minimum Qualifications --- Doctorate or
equivalent professional experience --- A minimum of 2 years of
teaching at the collegiate level Preferred Qualifications ---

Range & Benefits Statement The starting annual salary rate for this
position is $63,234. The starting salary may be negotiable above
this rate, however it will be dependent upon the knowledge,
experience, skills and abilities of the chosen candidate, the
budget of the hiring department, and approval from HR. PSU's
excellent benefits package includes 95% premium paid healthcare; a
generous retirement and vacation package; and reduced tuition rates
for employee, spouse or dependent at any of the Oregon Public
