Tenure-track Assistant Professor, Orchestra and Music History The Music Program at the University of Portland seeks a candidate to conduct the University Orchestra and Music History for its NASM-accredited program starting August 15, 2019. This is a tenure-track, nine-month position. Applications will be reviewed starting October 15th, 2018; the position is open until filled. Primary responsibilities include directing the University Orchestra, teaching a university core course introducing fine arts, and Music History courses for Music majors.-- A doctorate degree is required at appointment. Experience at the university level is required.-- Qualified applicants should submit the following: a letter of application that includes an educational philosophy for a liberal arts music program, a curriculum vitae, and contact information for 3-5 references. University of Portland 5000 N. Willamette Blvd. Portland, OR-- 97203-- A Teaching University:-- The standard teaching load is 4/4, with a 1/1 course equivalent release for research and scholarship. This will usually translate into two classroom courses and the University Orchestra per semester.-- Teaching excellence, an ongoing program of scholarship, professional development, and service to the department, the University and the profession are necessary for advancement.-- Variety of Courses:-- Because this is a small program, music faculty are expected to be able to teach a variety of music courses, both lower and upper division.-- The specific courses will depend on interest, background and department need.-- Intro to Fine Arts:-- All faculty in the Department of Performing and Fine Arts teach the core course called Introduction to Fine Arts. The subject matter includes classical music, theatre, film, visual arts (paintings and sculpture), architecture and possibly dance.-- Most of the sections are independent, but there are two sections that are team-taught.-- In this case, three faculty bring the students together for joint lectures by one of the instructors.-- This allows all students to learn from theatre, music and visual arts specialists, even though there are three sections and the groups meet separately much of the time.-- New faculty are assigned to these groups so they can learn how the course works and develop their knowledge of areas outside of their academic expertise.---- The Department of Performing and Fine Arts:-- The department has majors in Music and Theater as well as a minor in Fine Arts. There are six full-time music faculty, five full-time theater faculty, and one faculty member in fine arts.-- Adjuncts in the three fields, totaling 49, teach classroom and studio courses.-- Several studio teachers perform with the Oregon Symphony Orchestra and Portland Opera.-- Music Degrees Offered:-- The University of Portland offers a B.A. in music with four tracks: instrumental, vocal, pre-music education and general.-- There are currently 35 music majors and 26 music minors.-- The program is accredited by the National Association of Schools of Music.-- UP Musical Ensembles:-- The following are all auditioned ensembles - University Singers, Women's Chorale, University Orchestra, Wind Symphony, and Jazz Ensemble.-- Chamber ensembles include string quartets, jazz combos, flute choir, woodwind trio, brass quintet and both male and female a cappella groups. There is also a Chapel Music Ensemble in Campus Ministry, and a Pep Band run through the Athletics Department.-- Arts in Portland:-- Portland has a very active art community, including, among others, the Oregon Symphony Orchestra, Portland Opera, Choral Arts Ensemble, Portland Baroque Orchestra, Chamber Music Northwest, Portland Art Museum, Portland Center Stage, Artists Repertory Theatre, Oregon Ballet Theatre, and an active gallery and club scene.-- University of Portland website: www.up.edu-- Music Program website: www.up.edu/music A background investigation check is required before final hiring procedures can be completed for all faculty and staff positions.
