The Cab Structure group is design responsible for a wide variety of components/systems offering engineers the opportunity to broaden and develop technical skills. The sheet metal cab structure is the main area of focus, but responsibilities extend to other systems such as sheet metal fastening & sealing, composite roof assemblies, and sleeper windows. The group has responsibility of all DTNA cab platforms under the Freightliner & Western Star brand names. Responsibilities Design and develop initiatives within the Cab Structures team Provide creative, technically feasible designs and concepts that satisfy customer needs while adhering to Engineering standards and strategic direction Use NX and other design tools to create and maintain 3D part designs, detailed 2D part/ assembly drawings, GD&T, packaging studies, and installation diagrams Provide input to Product Design (styling) during concept phase of new projects Interface with engineering personnel including the Cab, Chassis, Mechatronics & Digital Mock-Up (DMU) Departments to ensure packaging needs are identified & enforced Interface with Compliance and Regulatory Affairs to ensure designs meet domestic and export government regulations, restrictions, and codes Interface with Engineering Analysis to determine the most effective and economic design and materials to be used in designs Work with Product Validation to verify the durability/integrity of cab structure systems Analyze and provide creative, technically feasible solutions to problems encountered in validation and production and promptly resolve plant build issues Work closely with Manufacturing Engineering and the manufacturing plants on cab-in-white assembly processes, including fastening, adhesives, and sealing Develop, release, and maintain accurate Engineering documentation Identify optimum materials, tolerances, finishes, fasteners, and production methods for new designs Interface with suppliers in the design and development phase, prototype part procurement, production tool build, and into series production. Improve competitive market position by keeping abreast of state-of-the-art developments in the trucking industry and applying the new knowledge to designs. Strive to reduce the complexity of our products Prioritize assignments consistent with business goals and successfully implement projects on time and within budget. Proactively inform management of project issues, delays and risks Generate and implement ideas to continuously improve work environment, systems, tools, processes as well as product cost and quality Develop cost reduction initiatives: Ideation, Concepts, and Quotes, Business cases, final design & documentation Lead and/or participate in Continuous Improvement (CI) activities Other activities as necessary and/or assigned Qualifications Basic Qualifications (Required Skills & Experience) Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering or related technical fields from an accredited college/university OR 6 years of relevant experience in lieu of degree required Experience with detailed 2D part / assembly drawings, GD&T, and creation of installation diagrams is required Experience designing metal parts in multiple processes (ex: class 'A' steel & aluminum body stampings, press brake sheet metal, castings, extrusions, welded & riveted structural assemblies, etc.) required Experience preparing and giving presentations to small groups is required Demonstrated ability to work cross functionally to reconcile conflicting design solutions into robust and cost effective solutions required Understanding of engineering upstream and downstream processes required An attached resume is required Typical Minimum Experience Preferred (Desired Skills/Experience) 2-4 years of relevant experience preferred Demonstrated CAD expertise. (NX and surface development experience preferred) A strong background in metal stamping preferred Experience in using & evaluating Finite Element Analysis is required.
