Position Summary:
The General Mechanic performs mechanical repairs on a variety of
power equipment, including maintenance, modification, acquisition,
and circulation of tools and equipment. The role involves servicing
equipment in a preventative maintenance program, inspecting
inoperable equipment to locate defects, and repairing or
overhauling gas engines and their mechanical components.

Urban Forestry: A General Mechanic in urban forestry primarily
focuses on maintaining and repairing the equipment and tools
essential for tree care and related activities. Key equipment
includes chainsaws and woodchippers, which are critical for
effective tree management. This role is vital in ensuring that all
tools and machinery are in optimal working condition, supporting
successful tree care operations.Portland Parks and Recreation:
Mechanics in this group focus on small engine equipment such as
string trimmers, chainsaws, and diesel engines. A considerable
amount of time is dedicated to repairing diesel mowers with complex
hydraulic systems, as well as sharpening shears, chainsaws, and
mower blades.Portland Bureau of Transportation (PBOT): PBOT plans,
builds, manages, and maintains a safe and effective transportation
system that provides access and mobility for people and businesses.
General mechanics here manage and maintain equipment used for
operational maintenance of streets, sidewalks, traffic signs, and
sewers, including gas-powered units, hydraulics, and snow removal
equipment. PBOT maintenance mechanics are essential employees and
must report during emergency conditions.
What you'll get to do:Perform mechanical repairs and maintenance on
a wide variety of power equipment and tools.Conduct preventative
maintenance on equipment to ensure optimal performance.Diagnose,
test, and repair mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, pneumatic,
diesel, and gas-powered equipment.Manage and maintain computerized
preventative maintenance programs and equipment inventory.Provide
technical assistance and training on the safe operation and use of
tools and equipment.Work collaboratively with a diverse workforce
to promote a safe and efficient workplace.
