Direct listing Job overview: Relay is hiring a Director, Employment Risk & Compliance, to join our People & Culture team. We are seeking an experienced professional who thrives in a collaborative team environment and is eager to help further Relay's vision of a world where everyone has meaningful work. In this role, you'll lead the development and execution of risk management and legal compliance strategies, oversee investigations into employee claims, and be the team leader for the collective bargaining process. You will also have a strategic role in our Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI) work, both serving as our AAP officer and leading the revision of policies and procedures to further Relay's efforts to become an anti-racist organization.Wages & Benefits:

  • Shift: M-F Full Time - Normal Business Hours
  • Salary Range: $100,000 - $110,000 per year DOE
  • Full-time benefits include medical, dental, 403b retirement plan, and life insurance
  • Relay pays 100% of an employee's medical/dental premiums

  • Hybrid remote work (work from home and in office as needed) Duties and Responsibilities:
    • Coordinate with outside counsel and BOLI as needed to provide Relay management legal advice and strategic guidance to investigations involving discrimination, harassment, differential treatment, wage and hour issues, misconduct and violations of policies and practices
    • Continuously audit programs, policies and procedures to ensure best practices are followed and risks are avoided or mitigated
    • Identify areas of actual or potential exposure and advise management with action plans
    • Provide direction in the management and resolution of liability incidents, accidents and claims
    • Ensure all complaints received via reporting hotline are addressed timely and investigated as appropriate; maintain relationship with hotline vendor
    • Support Relay's compliance with Source America and Ability One program requirements Legal Compliance and Activity
      • Ensure equal opportunity, diversity and affirmative action compliance by developing the annual affirmative action plan, disseminating required information, coordinating and/or conducting the required trainings, and guiding personnel actions accordingly
      • In collaboration with outside counsel, serve as the subject matter expert on applicable federal, state and local employment laws and regulations and ensure ongoing compliance
      • Research and understand existing and proposed legislation and advise affected departments on methods of compliance with the support of outside counsel
      • In collaboration with outside counsel, create and compile position statements and other persuasive documents in response to BOLI, EEOC, DOL, and other government agency claims and audits
      • Direct outside counsel for liability and employment related claims and provide, gather and investigate the facts and information, documents and evidence, etc., related to litigation
      • Direct and coordinate the release of employment and personnel information in relation to subpoenas, court orders, attorney requests, state/federal investigations, etc.
      • Work with counsel to draft legal documents such as waivers, agreements, contracts, releases, licenses, permits, etc.; adapt existing legal documents to apply to current situations Employee and Labor Relations
        • Lead and/or oversee internal and external investigations requiring fact-finding, verification of facts and issues in matters affecting disciplinary actions, grievances, appeals, and complaints in collaboration with Employee Relations Manager
        • Analyze and evaluate evidence in cases of disciplinary action; develop additional supportive evidence, background information, and documentation
        • Recommend corrective action based on investigatory findings for both union and non-union employees; review and approve employee disciplinary actions, such as written warnings or terminations
        • Negotiate and resolve union grievances
        • Interpret and advise management on the administration of collective bargaining agreements
        • Lead the bargaining process for all union contract renewals, including serving as the liaison with union representatives, coordinating scheduling and agendas for bargaining sessions, engaging management in the process, and facilitating the negotiation of contract terms
        • Review, interpret and help implement union contract terms for management and staff, including training staff as needed, and ensure business practices are in line with contract terms
        • Problem-solve labor-related issues with management staff and assist in the grievance and disciplinary processes as needed
        • Recommend and participate in the development of personnel policies and procedures
        • Maintain the employee handbook in compliance with employment laws and company best practices, with appropriate consultation with outside counsel
        • Routinely audit job descriptions and employee classifications to ensure compliance with wage and hour laws Qualifications and Experience:
          • 10+ years of risk management, human resources, or employment law experience, including managing a team
          • Experience leading affirmative action plan and related efforts
          • Strong knowledge of federal and state employment laws and regulations
          • Ability to thrive in a collaborative team environment
          • Keen ability to see the big picture, anticipate legal issues or risks, and provide useful and strategic advice across the company and to the senior executive team
          • Excellent organizational skills and interpersonal skills, including the ability to lead and facilitate meetings with diverse and/or oppositional parties
          • Excellent communication skills including speaking, writing, listening, and presenting
          • Ability to compose technical correspondence, reports, and documents with appropriate level of diplomacy in the conveyance of sensitive subjects
          • Ability to remain calm and diffuse tense or angry situations
          • Ability to handle sensitive and highly personal information
          • Strong computer skills including MS, Outlook, Word, Excel and PowerPoint; experience with HRIS programs
          • Ability to pass criminal history background check and/or fingerprinting as appropriate at any time during employment.
