POSITION SUMMARY
The Director of Communications uses the voice of Meyer Memorial Trust to advance Meyer's vision and priorities. Partnering with the leadership team and across every department, the Director creates an annual communications plan and effectively implements it, making the most of all Meyer has to create a more equitable Oregon. The Director serves in a leadership position, overseeing a dedicated staff of skilled communicators as well as a team of consultants. The Director works closely with the CEO on executive communications and oversees all external and internal communications. S/he/they are responsible for developing a robust, multi-faceted communications program for Meyer, directly manage communications activities that enhance Meyer's position as a champion for Oregon and for the sector and strengthen Meyer's role as a platform for advancing equity and justice. The successful candidate will bring a vision for how Meyer's voice and public presence can enhance its substantive work.

The Director of Communications reports to the CEO and serves on the Meyer's senior leadership team. The Director is the organization's go-to communications expert, using Meyer's voice and reputation to increase impact. This individual operates at the enterprise level across Meyer and as a thought partner to the program staff in the individual issue areas.

PRIMARY SCOPE

USE THE POWER OF COMMUNICATIONS TO ADVANCE MEYER'S VISION

  • Create a proactive communications strategy and plan that aligns the overall organizational strategy (which is being updated).
  • Demonstrate deep knowledge of Meyer's ambitions, goals and priorities, and connect this knowledge with what is going on in the world to seed and shape conversations internally and externally to enhance the work.
  • Serve as a trusted, sought-after leader and counselor throughout Meyer.
  • Stay well-informed about Meyer's priorities, as well as those of its partners, to take advantage of emerging opportunities to use Meyer's voice strategically in real time.
  • Knowledgeable about and applies best practices for effective communications.
  • Build and maintain strong media relationships to improve quantity and quality of media coverage about the work and impact of Meyer's grantees and partners.
  • Work, in collaboration with others, to identify potential opportunities to showcase the work and leadership of Meyer's grantees and partners.
  • Maintain relationships with community and policy leaders to keep the CEO connected and informed.
  • Articulate and socialize CEO vision.
  • Use communications to demonstrate Meyer lives its values.
  • Project management of goals and deliverables, including triaging to ensure time sensitive responses are delivered quickly.
  • Conduct crisis communications to manage reputational threats to Meyer.ESTABLISH CLEAR COMMUNICATIONS, INSIDE AND OUTSIDE OF MEYER
    • Oversee effective planning and implementation of institution-wide, executive, program and business/investment related internal and external communications.STRENGTHEN MEYER AS A COMMUNICATING ORGANIZATION
      • Manages culture of communication through regular training and professional development for staff on strategies, procedures, messaging, tools and social media.LEAD AND MANAGE A HIGH-FUNCTIONING TEAM
        • Lead, manage and motivate a well-directed, impactful and diverse communications team whose efforts are aligned with Meyer's priorities.
        • Hire and manage consultants as needed to have the capacity Meyer needs to conduct high-quality and high-impact communication efforts.
        • Develop a communications team that is known organization wide as creative, responsive, trusted and collaborative.
        • Measure progress and results of the team and recognize performance.
        • Manage and maintain comprehensive communications budget, expenses and vendor contracts.EQUITY

            The successful candidate is a strong storyteller, narrative shaper and will have 15 or more years of progressive strategic communications experience, including five years in a leadership position. Preference for those who have worked in Oregon. The Director of Communications will have a proven track record in the development and implementation of integrated communications programs, strategic communications, digital marketing, branding and message framing and positioning.

            We are looking for someone who is a quick study, can get up to speed on various issues and players and sees opportunities and ways to connect dots. The person will have extensive experience creating effective communications strategies, setting agendas in public spaces, managing teams and serving in leadership roles, particularly in the philanthropic sector.

            The successful candidate will have a demonstrated ability to partner with, counsel and influence an executive leadership team to drive strategic outcomes. They will have fluency with new and emerging communications practices and a track record of operating at consistently high standards and within budget.

            The most qualified candidate thrives while working in a highly collaborative and dynamic work environment, shows good judgement and has a passion for the purpose behind Meyer's work.

            • Demonstrated ability to work effectively with a broad range of diverse groups as evidenced by excellent listening and communication skills, balanced and reasoned approaches to problems, ability to inspire trust and confidence and flexibility and openness to differing points of view.
            • The ability to integrate the communications functions into all aspects of the organization.
            • Comfortable with ambiguity and uncertainty.
            • Capable of effectively addressing sensitive issues such as power dynamics, gender and racial inequities in communications.
            • Ability to attract and recruit top talent, motivate them, delegate effectively, celebrate diversity within the team and manage performance.
            • Leader with high emotional intelligence who is self-reflective, develops and maintains strong relationships, takes initiative and follows through on commitments and recognizes and navigates power dynamics.
            • Creates a sense of purpose and meaning for the team. Attention to detail and ability to manage multiple tasks.
              • Experience with or working knowledge of communication guidelines for private foundations in the advocacy space.
              • Have strong knowledge of Oregon, including direct experience with people from all regions of the state, esp. nonprofit sector.PHYSICAL DEMANDS/WORK ENVIRONMENT

                While performing the duties of this job, the employee will:
                • Engage in regular communication in person as well as through electronic means.

                • Work in a business setting of open cubicles with an estimated 45-60 decibel noise level.

                  COMPENSATION
                  Salary range $145,000 - $165,000
