Department Overview The Nurse Manager provides leadership to the Outpatient Infusion Unit at the Center for Health and Healing Building 2 (CHH2) and the Immunology Infusion Unit at Physicians Pavilion (PPV). S/he plans for and develops the clinical programming of the assigned unit, assuring optimal quality care and continuity for patients and families. S/he is responsible for guiding/overseeing day-to-day clinical operations. S/he is responsible for all human resources functions including clinical compliance and staff development. The Nurse Manager works in collaboration with the Director of Nursing for the assigned location and the clinic management team. This position reports to the Director of Nursing, Ambulatory Oncology. The Nurse Manager ensures seven days a week effective delivery of clinical patient care and compliance with administrative and clinical policies and procedures. Partners with medical providers and other disciplines to assure quality patient/family centered care. Function/Duties of Position Leadership Demonstrates leadership practices that influence others to achieve the mission, vision, goals, and objectives of patient care services, OHSU and the Knight Cancer Institute. Utilizes theory and critical thinking in the enactment, demonstration and mentoring of others so that demonstrated expertise is available to supervised personnel and colleagues. Integrates age specific/developmental theory and cultural sensitivity into management practice. Support of the Outpatient Oncology Unit Based Nurse Practice Council in making recommendations, accomplishing tasks and providing input. Actively participates in ongoing or ad hoc committees or task forces to identify and resolve patient care issues. Assesses educational needs on an annual basis and as needed. Coordinates educational support from the Knight and centralized resources. Supports clinical research activities. Prepares staffing plan, reviews and approves work schedules to ensure adequate staff coverage for unit operations (7 day coverage for the infusion unit). Ensures the staffing needs of the department are met by projecting needs, interviewing and hiring employees to fill vacant positions and resolving staffing issues to ensure the department's workload is handled effectively. Reviews and evaluates outcomes specific to staffing plan. Supports assigned staff in meeting their highest level of personal growth, satisfaction and professionalism. Nursing Practice Analyzes and evaluates nursing practice, research and trends; applies knowledge to the development of standards of care and clinical practice ensuring optimal patient outcomes and fiscal viability. Utilizes knowledge of age specific/developmental specific data to assist staff in assessing patient care needs and planning care. Partners with the medical staff and other disciplines in the establishment of patient care goals. Directs development of priority competencies (technical skills, critical thinking, human relationship skills) for each type of staff on selected areas so that role performance is continually maintained/improved at the highest level. Coordinates the establishment of nursing care practices by using selected nursing practice information in unusual or complex patient care situations. Directs and supervises staff and ensures a safe therapeutic environment. Maintains personal and professional growth and the professional development of staff by participating in educational programs and professional organizations. Partners with medical staff and other disciplines in the establishment of patient care goals. Compliance and Communication Ensures the competence of unit staff and their understanding of policies and regulations pertaining to patient care services: oversees the provision of care and monitors the compliance with organizational and regulatory requirements. Maintains the integrity of management and clinical information so that data is available for patient and resource management. Adheres to OHSU rules and regulations and contract agreements. Contributes to the formulation of patient care and administrative policies and procedures; communicates and implements them to staff to ensure their understanding and compliance. Communicates plans and decisions to unit staff and provides for communication linkages between staff and administration ensuring the flow of accurate and timely information. Monitors compliance of staff with educational objectives. Quality Management Collaborates regarding patient flow and infusion chair turnover to ensure the delivery of optimal nursing care and arranges for continuity of care when warranted by patient condition. Directs the provision of personalized, coordinated quality services, which are responsive to changing health care trends so that customer demands are met. Formulates unit goals and objectives, which are reflective of the philosophy of patient care services, interprets goals, and identifies measurable objectives and monitors progress toward the achievement of specified goals in keeping with operational standards. Financial Management Participates, develops and submits unit budget to director for review and approval. Monitors expenditures to ensure compliance within fiscal constraints and explains any variances. Reviews and evaluates the allocation of resources to ensure cost effective, efficient, productive, competitive operations while maintaining the delivery of quality care to patients. Required Qualifications Education: Internal applicants must have a minimum of a Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree and must obtain a Masters in Nursing or healthcare related field within 5 years of hire. External applicants must have a Master's degree in Nursing or healthcare related field. Experience: Internal applicants: Must have at least 3-5 years of Oncology Experience and at least two years of progressive leadership (charge nurse or supervisory experience) External: Two or more years experience in progressively increasing managerial/ supervisory roles in a hospital or medical group management setting. Job Related Knowledge, Skills and Abilities (Competencies): Experience with process improvement; Capability to understand a process; can use analytic skills to understand the extent of the problem and can facilitate a group to an improvement including the ability to follow-up to ensure the improvement works and is followed or is adjusted if it is not working as planned; Strong analytic skills; Competent with excel or other other database or analytic software. Demonstrated organization skills; can effectively facilitate a meeting demonstrating the ability to set the objective, ensure the group stays on task and follows-up on any action items. Demonstrated problem solving skills including the ability to articulate the problem solving methodology they use. Demonstrated commnications, interpersonal and conflict resolution skills; has the ability to coach staff to be able to resolve conflicts with their colleagues. Demonstrated leadership and planning skills. Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a multi-disciplinary setting. Understands the Nursing Professional Practice role and can be a coach and mentor to staff in understanding their professional role. Registrations, Certifications, and/or Licenses: Oregon RN License required. Current BLS required. Preferred Qualifications Ambulatory Care experience. Experience with an oncology and/or BMT patient population. Familiarity with managing nursing staff in an oncology infusion unit is preferred. Experience with the EPIC electronic medical record preferred. Experience with lean process improvement Bone Marrow Transplant and/or Oncology Nurse certification preferred.
