POSITION SUMMARY The Step Up Mental Health Specialist is responsible for ensuring that all referred Step Up High School students are provided the advocacy, individual/group therapy, and social/emotional support necessary to be successful in school by working closely with the Step Up Site Leadership Team & School Success Advocates as well as, High School administrators & educators. Step Up teams operate at three PPS high schools - Roosevelt, Madison, and Franklin and serves over 350 students. The Mental Health Specialist works in partnership with the Step Up Site Supervisors and Student Support Specialists at all three of the high school sites to ensure that the students have the tools/skills they need to effectively work through issues that arise due to their social/emotional and mental health needs. The Mental Health Specialist works with their students to promote social-emotional growth and provide students a safe space to process. Additionally, this position will serve in collaboration with the counseling team as an expert in providing culturally relevant and specific services while ensuring it is done in an equitable approach. SCHEDULE WORK HOURS The Mental Health Specialist is a 12-month position split into two sections, summer (June - August) and the school year (Sept. 3,2020 - June 11, 2021) August is usually Step Up camp month, Step Up is revising the August schedule this year due to the Covid-19 pandemic. August will include two weeks of staff training and two weeks of student engagement activities. August-September will also include an on-boarding process for this position. This position's school year schedule is high school based at 40 hours per week for the entire school year. Monday through and Friday with occasional required evenings and weekends. Step Up plans to incorporate day and/or overnight retreats during the school year as health conditions are secured. Training and professional development will periodically take place during the 9-5 pm work hours. In the case of PPS continuing with distance learning or a blended form of digital and physical learning, Step Up will collaborate and align its work and support to students and families both physically and digitally within the PPS learning design. ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES Student Outreach, Advocacy, and Intervention Duties: Responsible for creating and implementing social-emotional support interventions. Responsible for creating and implementing positive behavior support plans. Responsible for creating and implementing mental health assessments and treatment plans as well as consistently updating progress notes. Provide family intervention and/or family therapy sessions with student client and their family. Responsible for the facilitation of social-emotional support groups. Responsible for providing youth with one-on-one therapy sessions. Support students by providing meaningful information for problem-solving, healthy choice-making, and increasing resiliency, self-direction, and motivation. Provide leadership, guidance, and expertise to ensure Child Abuse and Neglect mandated reporting, as well as sexual conduct issues, are appropriately handled that includes assisting students, fellow staff members, filing reports with the Department of Human Services, creating and filing Incident Reports, follow up and tracking documentation. Advocate Support Duties: Act as a resource for Advocates, individually and as a group, to develop the skill set needed to work effectively with their students. In partnership with Student Support Specialist research, support and communicate service plans and community resources to staff for youth and family services. In partnership with Student Support Specialist maintain up-to-date and accurate referral resource book. Attend community meetings as needed to ensure up-to-date information with service providers and community resources. Family Relationships Liaison Duties: Conduct home visits when needed and partner with Student Support Specialist with outreach to families through phone calls and mailings when needed. Responsible for collaborating with Student Support Specialist to connect families with additional community counseling and support referrals, as needed. Serve as a lead expert in regards to mental health. Maintain open communication with parents/guardians as needed. Program Administration Duties: Provide documentation of student attendance for all student contact time, family resource referrals, and donations. Assist in the coordination, facilitation, and management of special events. Participate in Step Up camps and assist with planning, training, supervision, logistics, and interventions as needed. Responsible for meeting weekly with the Site Supervisor and Student Support Specialist to update them on specific student progress and/or any concerns that are arising. Participate in the Extended Step Up Leadership Team, participate in organization-wide counseling team meetings, and other program meetings as required. Responsible for writing reports and documenting significant interactions with youth to appropriate channels (School, CPS/DSH, Open School, Family, etc): Mandatory reports, Incident Reports, tracking student progress, and student interventions. Serve as site contact with partner district mental health support teams: -- acting as an ambassador for the program, answer inquiries from students, parents, community district partners, and stakeholders -- serve on the school's Student Intervention Team -- maintaining a high level of professional and confidential behavior in dealing with sensitive information, families, partner organizations, school district employees, and the public -- attend community and partnership meetings, fairs, and/or groups. Other duties and responsibilities as assigned by the supervisor. EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE A Master's degree in Social Work and currently have their CSWA and is in the process of gaining their LCSW. Three (3) years experience working directly with diverse and under-served, multi-cultural youth and family population in a therapeutic setting. Ability to be confidential and sensitive with program information and maintain a professional demeanor toward staff and students, while exhibiting a passion for the mission and values of the organization and the students it serves. Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to be collaborative and work with a diverse population to solve problems and provide high-quality service. Ability to work well with students from diverse ethnic and socio-economic backgrounds and with disengaged populations. Strong group facilitation skills and ability to work effectively with a team and support others in a team environment. Strong organizational skills and ability to organize and prioritize tasks, communicate clearly verbally and in writing. OTHER SKILLS & ABILITIES Bilingual is preferred especially Spanish. Multiple organization worksite locations require the ability to travel to alternate offices periodically. OTHER REQUIREMENTS Must successfully pass the Oregon Department of Education fingerprint-based criminal history verification background check. Background checks are provided through Open School and Portland Public Schools partnership at no cost to employees. Must attend Open School training and professional development workshops and activities. Must be able to position yourself as a learner and be willing to work with youth from a strength-based approach. Must have a valid current driver's license. First Aid/CPR certified preferred and can be provided by Open School. Must have Masters in Social Work and have CSWA and are currently working towards their LCSW or already have an up to date LCSW.
