Job Description:
Provide high quality health care to Kaiser Permanente members in
a cost-effective manner and in accordance with accepted
professional practice standards.
Essential Responsibilities:
- Provide direct assessment, diagnosis and
formulation/implementation of treatment plan for patients
presenting with neurosurgical illness or injury. Outpatient
responsibilities include histories and physicals, preoperative
exams, ordering diagnostic studies and medications, screening
referrals and post-operative follow-up. Significant time is spent
handling patient inquiries regarding preoperative, intra-operative
and post-operative care.
- Provide surgical services as a first assistant on neurosurgical
cases in the operating room. Surgical procedures include
craniotomies for microdiscectomies, tumors, aneurysms, AV
malformations, stents, microsurgery, and laminectomies. Provide
surgical call coverage with neurosurgeon on regular department
rotation.
- Provide inpatient care by rounding on neurosurgical patients
during weekdays and/or weekends. Responsibilities include writing
post-operative orders, charting follow-up notes, changing
dressings, removing sutures, handling ventriculostomy tubing's, and
assisting with placement of halos, and placement of lumbar drain.
Dictate all discharge summaries and write discharge orders for
follow-up care in the clinic. Perform other duties as requested.
The above care must be documented in writing in patient's permanent
medical record in accordance with accepted medical/legal standards.
All medical care must be provided in accordance with accepted
practice standards, hospital/clinic protocols (including
supervision by a physician) and State licensing guidelines.
Basic Qualifications:
Experience
- N/A
Education
- Graduate of ANA-approved NP or AMA-approved PA or Child Health
Associate training program or equivalent requirements to meet State
licensure.
License, Certification, Registration
- NP or PA National Certification at time of
hire/transfer.
- Current Oregon AND Washington NP and RN, or PA license
required. License in state where assigned required upon
hire/transfer, application for license in secondary state required
within 2 weeks of hire/transfer and must be obtained within 6
months.
- DEA/Prescribing registration at time of hire/transfer.
Registration in state where assigned required upon hire/transfer,
application for registration in secondary state required within 2
weeks of hire/transfer and must be obtained within 6
months.
- National Provider Identifier (NPI) required at time of
hire/transfer.
Additional Requirements:
- N/A
Preferred Qualifications:
- Minimum two (2) years clinical experience in neurosurgical
setting.
- Minimum two (2) years surgical experience, with emphasis on
neurosurgical procedures.
- Thorough and working knowledge of neurosurgical disease and
injuries and their treatment.
- Thorough and working knowledge of surgical techniques, with
emphasis on neurosurgical procedures.
- Working knowledge of state health care laws, licensing board
regulations and controlled substance regulations. Important to know
limitations and when to refer patients to the
neurosurgeon.
- Ability to assess, diagnose and plan effective treatment for
neurosurgical diseases and injuries.
- Excellent assistant surgical skills, especially with
neurosurgical procedures.
Ability to use appropriate procedural/testing equipment, to see
large volume of patients, and to interface with large physician and
support staff.
Note:
Work Locations(s): Mt. Talbert & Sunnyside Medical Center. Shared
call rotation to support the service.
