You are the go-to person ensuring that every detail is arranged for
surgical services. You're also an important presence within the
surgical field, as you pass proper instruments and supplies to
other members of the surgical team. Your ability to work in a

healthcare community. The Surgical Technologist participates as
part of the surgical team in assisting nursing staff in support
services necessary for safe and efficient care of patients within
the various areas of surgical services. This individual assists at
the surgical field passing instruments and supplies to other
members of the surgical team; participates in acquiring, preparing
and equipping the surgical suites; assists in nonsurgical patient
intervention under the direct supervision of a physician or RN; and
may serve as a Core Technician, with responsibility for maintaining
sterile technique and providing supplies and instruments as
requested. Legacy Silverton Medical Center serves the heart of the
Willamette Valley with a wide mix of services, many not typically
available in a community hospital: CT scan (computerized
tomography), nuclear medicine, echocardiography, family birth
center and much more. Responsibilities
Assessment & Planning: Patient care is appropriately planned
through effective utilization of available resources. Reviews
physician preference cards and case carts. Demonstrates
understanding of surgical procedures, instrumentation and
equipment. Organizes and adapts plan of care with consideration for
patients/client's needs, desires and condition. Allows adequate
time for set up and problem solving before each surgical procedure.
Communicates needs to circulating nurse in an appropriate fashion
and time to provide a positive patient and procedure outcome.
Technical Competence: Skills, knowledge & use of equipment are
optimized during the procedure to provide quality surgical support
with accuracy & efficiency. Maintains current competency checklist,
including mandatory components (CPR, universal precautions, etc.).
Fulfills educational requirements regarding role in safety,
infection control and internal/external disaster plans and
procedures, risk management and quality improvement. Seeks
clarification of unclear verbal orders. Demonstrates competence in
assembly, use and care of equipment. Demonstrates efficient,
competent scrubbing techniques and anticipates surgeons' needs
during operative procedures. Assists surgeons at operative field.
Actively participates in continuing education and professional
development. Achieves 16 hours of continuing education credits
every two years as required by law. Shares information and acquired
knowledge with others. Follows established standards in providing
care. Safety/Environment: Job responsibilities are performed in
accordance with written standards & professional judgment so there
is no injury to self or others. Demonstrates a working knowledge of
universal precautions and infection control. Participates in the
Universal Protocol and Time Out as a member of the procedure team
focusing on the active confirmation of the correct patient,
surgery/procedure, site and other critical elements. Identifies
safety issues and takes appropriate action. Actively uses and
oversees aseptic technique. Demonstrates proper body mechanics to
protect self and patient, using sufficient help when task exceeds
personal capabilities. Provides neat, orderly and safe environment
for the Operating Room team and patient by following hospital and
department policies and procedures. Follows established procedures
for protection of self and others in handling bodily substances
utilizing PPE and standard precautions. Plans and prepares
equipment and supplies for operative procedures appropriately and
in a timely manner. Assists with quick and efficient turnover and
set-up of surgical cases. Demonstrates effective and efficient use
of supplies and equipment. Planning and coordination of care: Care
is coordinated and delivered in coordination with
client/patient/family and other members of healthcare team to
maximize patient/client outcome and use of resources. Prioritizes
and completes delegated duties within appropriate time frames.
Participates in interdisciplinary patient/client care planning.
Plans and prepares equipment and supplies for operative procedures
appropriately and in a timely manner. Assists with quick and
efficient cleaning, turnover and setup of cases. Professional
Development: Professional knowledge & skills are updated & shared
to improve quality of care. Demonstrates awareness of hospital,
department and unit goals by participating in activities to
constructively facilitate change. Supports
hospital/nursing/department/unit standards and operations.
Identifies clinical practice issues and uses appropriate channels
of communication to obtain evaluation and promote resolution. Keeps
abreast of recent changes in department and hospital standards by
reading transmittals/communications within a month of distribution.
Complies with changes in nursing and hospital standards. Assists in
the completion of evaluations/checklists. Actively participates in
quality improvement activities. Promotes unit-based activities and
assists in identifying targets. Participates in Continuous Quality
Improvement orientation and training sessions as appropriate.
Advocates for Continuous Quality Improvement with peers,
patients/family and medical staff. Reviews regular Continuous
Quality Improvement reports. Acts as patient advocate by providing
patient privacy and promoting patient confidentiality. Implements
patient Bill of Rights. Facilitates implementation of Patient's
Self-Determination Act. Participates in professional development
and education activities. Develops and implements a plan for
meeting and education activities. Assists in the orientation of
students, new staff and float personnel. Assists in the completion
of peer review process evaluation and checklists as requested.
Attends and documents job related in-services/conferences.
Participates with other colleagues in identifying and discussing
ethical conflicts. Qualifications
Education: High school diploma or equivalent. Graduation from an
accredited Surgical Technologist program or completion of a
military training program for surgical technologists, or equivalent
experience. As of January 1, 2017, in lieu of the formal Surgical
Technologist training program requirement, may substitute
professional experience if candidate has worked 2 out of last 3
years as Surgical Technologist. Experience: 1 year Surgical
Technologist experience preferred. Skills: Basic level patient care
skills per requirements of the position. Basic medical terminology.
Keyboard skills and ability to navigate electronic systems
applicable to job functions. Ability to understand and apply
principles of sterile technique and surgical procedures within the
scope of the position Able to work in a fast paced environment and
prioritize multiple assignments. Flexibility and willingness to
