The Caf Servers are responsible for creating an outstanding guest experience, food and tea prep, and cash handling. The Caf Servers report to the Caf Manager. The Umami Caf serves green tea and Japanese sweets, seats 38, and has no kitchen or back of house. We're looking for someone with a passion for great service and who enjoys a fast-paced work environment. The Umami Caf is now requiring proof of vaccination for guests 12 and older.COVID-19 Vaccination Policy: For the safety of our staff, volunteers, and guests, Portland Japanese Garden requires all staff and volunteers to be vaccinated against the COVID-19 virus, including the booster. Candidates must be fully vaccinated by their hire date and must provide proof of vaccination upon hire.Primary Duties Follow Garden s service standard, including excellent work ethic and outstanding customer serviceWork in caf regularly with table service, hosting, food and tea prep, dishwashing, and cash handlingFollow standard cash handling and credit card transaction policies and proceduresMaintain exemplary cleanliness standards throughout the caf Assist with stocking and resupply of food and suppliesEnsure that all drink and food preparation procedures are followed, maintaining the highest quality and safetyAttend ongoing training and maintain knowledge of Japanese green tea and Omotenashi (Japanese Customer Service)Assist with light administrative duties such as filing for the Caf or other departments as neededOther duties as assignedOther Responsibilities Familiarize oneself with the organization and the Employee HandbookGet to know fellow staff members, developing trust, establishing credibility, encouraging teamwork, and creating an atmosphere of open, honest, two-way communication Serve as a role model for Garden volunteers, providing support and encouragement to volunteers in their roles across the GardenMaintain a high level of professionalism in manner and appearanceAdhere to Garden Dress Code and wear Garden uniformQualificationsMinimum 2 years caf or restaurant experience, fine dining preferredExcellent customer service and effective teamwork skillsWell organized, detail-oriented, and able to multi-taskFood Handler s permit requiredSpecial RequirementsSpecial consideration given to applicants with knowledge of tea, a familiarity with Omotenashi (Japanese way of hospitality and customer service), and Japanese cultureApplicants with both Front of House and Back of House experience preferredApplicants with Hosting experience preferredAble to work occasional overtimeMust be able to remain in a stationary position andor move about the Caf and Garden for several hoursCompensation & ScheduleWage: $16.50hour (plus tips)This is a full-time, hourly position with approximately 32-40 hours per week. Below are the transportation options for staff commuting to the Garden:Parking: Staff may park in the numbered spaces throughout Washington Park, which require payment. The cost is $8day, or staff may request parking permits from Washington Park. The Garden subsidizes a portion of the cost for parking permits; the cost for staff is $75 during the high season (March September) and $50 during the low season (October February).Bus Passes: For staff who take public transit as their primary means of commuting to the Garden, we provide paid bus passes. Full-time staff receive a monthly TriMet pass, and part-time staff receive daily passes, based on their work schedule.Transportation Stipend: Staff who take any form of alternative transit to get to work qualify for a $5 daily stipend. This includes taking public transit, walking, biking, carpooling, or getting dropped off. The only staff who do not qualify for the stipend are those who are receiving a bus pass through the Garden.ApplicationsTo apply, please submit a resume, and three work-related references.
