- Status: Full-Time, Regular, -Exempt
- Reports To: Meal Ministries Manager
- Hours: Thursday - Monday (8 -AM - 4:30 PM), Flexible for
Sunday, Special Events as necessary
- Location: Burnside Shelter (111 West Burnside St.)
- Pay Rate: $17.50-$19.50 (Depending on Experience)THE PLACE
The Burnside -Shelter of Portland Rescue Mission hosts our 24-hour
ministry 365 days of the year to individuals experiencing
homelessness and addiction in downtown Portland. Comprehensive
emergency services are available to any individual coming through
our doors, and our highly relational staff provide compassionate,
resource-rich care and opportunity to our guests. Broad services
from immediate care to transitional shelter programming are
provided by a skilled team focused on building relationships that
serve to support growth away from the street environment. We invite

important needs of our dynamic ministry.THE POSITIONThe Kitchen
Manager -supports the provision of the tens of thousands of meals
served at the Burnside Shelter every year through a network of
volunteers, program participants and community partners. This role
equips and trains program participants in real-world work skills as
they learn food service and prepare nutritionally sound meals while
ensuring good stewardship of donations, food safety, and policy
compliance.THE ESSENTIALS
- Provide much needed nourishment to Portland Rescue Mission
guests and program participants through menu planning, ordering and
preparation of well-balanced meals that communicate hope and
Christian hospitality
- Ensure all food service requirements are met in preparation and
service at all times -
- Model and share Christian faith and service to all program
participants and volunteers through supervision, training and
working alongside
- Train Connect Program Participants in vocational abilities
related to production and provision of meals
- Maintain a relationally healthy kitchen environment through
resolving conflict, addressing behaviors and building teamwork
- Partner with and develop volunteers and volunteer groups in
providing compassionate and relational meal services to guests
- Steward donations well through active collaboration with other
meal ministry staff at Burnside and across sites to minimize food
costs and waste
- Efficiently organize the warehouse and food storage areas,
upholding high standards of cleanliness and safety, training others
in a healthy work environment
- Coordinate and support the work of the health department,
Oregon Food Bank, and other compliance focused organizations in
meeting and exceeding their accountability requirements
- Participate in other areas of ministry at the Burnside Shelter
as neededBACKGROUND AND QUALIFICATIONS
- A passionate relationship with Jesus Christ as Savior and a
testimony of continued growth in faith
- A calling to serve God in the ministry to men and women
experiencing homelessness and addiction
- Actively participate in a church community, manifesting
spiritual growth and spiritual maturity as defined by traditional
Biblical Standards
- Adheres to Portland Rescue Mission's Statement of Faith and
Code of Ethics
- A personal ethos and work ethic that reflects Portland Rescue
Mission's ministry culture - Highly Relational, Christ-Centered,
Joyful Servant
- Expertise and Specialty in Chef Services
- Ability to plan and support the cooking of approximately 900
daily meals
- Certification in food service or experience equivalent
- Food handlers card (Multnomah Co.) or willing to obtain
- Ability to maintain the kitchen environment and equipment
- Demonstrated ability to lead various groups/individual
volunteers in effective ministry
- Preferably have knowledge of and experience working with
individuals in and around the homeless community, with challenges
like those of addiction, mental health, and housing needs.
- Competency and comfortability in using support software such as
Excel, Outlook, and other office tools
- Valid driver's license in state of residence and experience
with box trucks and forklifts
- Ability to lift at least 50 lbs. unassisted - -EQUIPMENT USED
