Job Summary of Roles and Responsibilities
POWER Engineers is currently seeking a Physical Designer to work in the Power Delivery Substation Department. This position reports to our Portland office (located in Lake Oswego, Oregon). Flexibility is available for a hybrid work environment (employee will need to live within driving distance of the office).
Responsibilities
The position includes working within a team to complete complex and technically challenging aspects of physical design and understanding and adhering to client standards.



  • Perform the detailed Physical drafting & design of utility substations. Typical designs include but are not limited to:


  • Physical layouts


  • Equipment selection


  • General arrangement plans, sections, and elevations


  • Control building design and details


  • Cable and conduit plans and details


  • Ground grid design and details


  • Lightning protection design and details


  • Yard lighting design and details


  • Material lists


  • One-line diagrams


  • Work with engineers to develop drawing packages.


  • Coordinate designs with other disciplines such as Substation Protection & Control, Structural, and Civil.


  • Participate in quality assurance and quality control programs.


  • Contribute to engineering project scheduling and budget management.


    Required Education/Experience


    • Associate's degree or equivalent technical education.


    • Experience with AutoCAD or MicroStation; experience with both is preferred.


    • Understanding of electric utility substation design.


    • Electrical and mechanical reasoning skills and attention to detail.


    • Good command of the Microsoft Office Suite, with an emphasis on Outlook, Excel and Word.


    • The candidate must have strong command of the English language with good written and oral communication skills to work effectively with internal team members and external client personnel.


    • Candidate must be legally authorized to work permanently in the U.S. without the need for work sponsorship.


      Desired Education/Experience


      • Three (3) or more years of experience in electric utility substation design is preferred.


      • Familiarity with Raster Design and/or Bentley Descartes.


      • Ability to produce applicable drawings from rough sketches, notes, client examples, vendor drawings, and such.


      • Ability to select materials based on technical requirements.
